Every season is the perfect time to visit San Diego, but for those who live in a cold-weather climate, winter might be the absolute best time of year. The weather here is as close to perfect as you can get every month of the year, and when the snow is falling, the streets are slick with black ice, and the gray of the skies have leached all the color out of your soul, a visit to the town where summer springs eternal can turn seasonal affective disorder into pure delight. Staying in one of our Vacation Rentals by Kimberly winter sanctuaries will ensure that this getaway is one that you will compare all other vacations against. Here’s your Winter Journey to Greater San Diego Area.
Day 1: A Moonlit Walk on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas
Even in the winter, spending time with your toes in the sand will always be a good thing, and if the waters of Moonlight Beach are too cold to swim in—the Pacific Ocean is known to be cold, even as the towns that surround it are wonderfully warm—the simple pleasure of a moonlit walk at water’s edge will add a shimmer to your getaway that will never be forgotten. Named for the midnight picnics that the locals used to enjoy in the early 1900s, this beach is a popular swimming, surfing, and sporting beach, offering volleyball and basketball courts for visitors pleasure.
Day 2: Where the Whales Are in Oceanside
Winter is the ideal time to go on a whale (and dolphin) watching cruise in Oceanside, and Oceanside Adventures, 256 Harbor Drive South, offers luxury cruises that add a touch of culture to your wilding activities. The boats they use are equipped with the latest technology, enabling a successful cruise every time, and as you search for gray, minke, humpback, and fin whales, as well as all four local species of dolphin, you can also be sipping from a very fine wine, as the boat offers drinks and food for purchase.
Day 3: We Love a Christmas Parade in San Diego
The winter holidays are a popular time for a visit, and as you drive through neighborhoods checking out the holiday lights, tell Santa what you want for Christmas in Seaport Village, or shop for Christmas gifts at the Holiday Market at Petco Park, you may find that your favorite adventure may be enjoyed sitting on the sidelines of the Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights! For over 50 years, a parade of boats, 80 in total, stun bystanders with their lavish display of lights, starting at Shelter Island and ending at Ferry Landing on Coronado. This free event lasts about an hour and a half, dazzling everyone its path.
Day 4: Stop and Smell the Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe
When celebrating a special occasion during your escape to Rancho Santa Fe, a beautiful meal at Mille Fleurs, 6009 Paseo Delicias, will take your celebration to the next level of wonderful. Mille Fleurs translates to 1,000 flowers, and although we can’t say for certain that you will find 1,000 flowers here, the 100-year-old Chinese oak tree that is growing on its patio will impress and its menu will delight. Award winning for nearly 40 years, the French menu features haute cuisine delights such as Black Sea caviar and tomahawk pork chops; excuse us while we go make our reservations now!
Day 5: Release Your Inner Tiger Woods in La Jolla
Golf is a year-round sport in this part of California, and one of the best courses in the entire nation can be found right here in La Jolla. Torrey Pines Golf Course, 11480 Torrey Pines Road, named for the unique pine trees that grow in the area, offers a challenging layout, stunning ocean views, and has hosted two major tournaments in its over 80 years of existence. Perched on cliffs that overlook the water, even if you golf your worst game, it will be impossible to have a bad time; just look at the views and discover how they soothe your soul.
Day 6: Hiking in Del Mar
The wonderful weather will make you want to stay outside as much as possible, especially if you hail from a wintry wonderland, and a hike along Sea Cliff Coastal Bluff Trail is one of our top recommendations. This hike is an easy one, and as you hike along the cliffs that overlook the water in Del Mar, we have a feeling this will be the winter adventure you never forget!
